Healthy Food Healthy Balance: Nutrition Unit

Here are some pictures of Mr. Williams' class participating in Food Group Cube Warm-up. This game teaches students about the daily recommended amounts eaten from 5 food groups and the oils, fats , & sweets group. The range for children 5-12 yrs. old is 5-7 ounces for Grains,  1.5-3 cups for Vegetables, 1.5-2 cups for Fruits, 2-3 cups for Milk, and 4.5-6 ounces for Meat & Beans.  Oils, fats, & sweets are to be used sparingly. You need some oils, fats, and sweets for good health(3-5 tsps). Eating the correct daily amounts from the food groups will give your body the necesssary energy to work, grow, and play.

How to Play:
Students begin jogging around the room when the music starts playing. Every 15-30 seconds the teacher throws the Food Group Cube in the air. The students stop their jog and perform specified exercises according to whatever side of the cube is facing up.
- If the cube is showing Milk, the students perform 2-3 jump ropes.
- If the cube is showing Grains, the students perform 5-7 jump shots.
-If the cube is showing Meat & Beans, the students perform 4-6 push ups.
-If the cube is showing Fruits, the students perform 1-2 rocket blasts.
-If the cube is showing, Vegetables, the students perform 1-3 crunches.
-If the cube is showing Oils, the students perform 3-5 seconds of watching TV or playing a video game.
This activity show last 3-5 minutes. The number of repetitions in each exercise represents the daily amounts of food needed from each food group.
